China, Germany, Italy and India Big Winners in Raising Money in 2010

Global clean energy finance and investment grew significantly in 2010 to $243 billion, a 30% increase from the previous year. China, Germany, Italy and India were among the nations that most successfully attracted private investments, according to new research released by The Pew Charitable Trusts.

China's record $54.4 billion in investments in 2010 represents a 39% increase from 2009. Germany was second in the G-20, up from third last year, after experiencing a 100% increase in investment to $41.2 billion.

"The clean energy sector is emerging as one of the most dynamic and competitive in the world, witnessing 630 percent growth in finance and investments since 2004," says Phyllis Cuttino, director of Pew's Clean Energy Program. "Countries like China, Germany and India were attractive to financers because they have national policies that support renewable energy standards, carbon-reduction targets and/or incentives for investment and production, and that create long-term certainty for investors."

The U.S., which had maintained the top spot until 2008, fell another rung in 2010 to third with $34 billion. The U.K. experienced the largest decline among the G-20, falling from fifth to 13th. The report suggests that uncertainty regarding clean energy policies in these countries is causing investors to look elsewhere for opportunities.

Italy attracted $13.9 billion in clean energy financing last year, improving its global standing to fourth, from eighth in 2009. For the first time, India joined the top 10 ranking, attracting $4 billion, a 25% increase.

Wind power continued to be the favored technology for investors at $95 billion. However, the solar sector experienced significant growth in 2010, with investments growing 53% to a record $79 billion and more than 17 GW of new generating capacity globally.

PV Module Market Reaches $7.1 Billion

Solar PV module shipments increased for the fifth consecutive quarter in the second quarter of 2010 (Q1 2010) to 3.7 GW, generating $7.1 billion in revenues, according to IMS Research's latest quarterly report on the solar cell and module market.

The first half of this year saw high demand from major PV markets, particularly Germany where proposed feed-in-tariff cuts drove demand to new levels, the company says. Solar module shipments are forecast to increase once again in the third quarter to reach 4.3 GW.

"In contrast to the first half of 2009, when declining module prices and poor economic conditions stalled the market, current market conditions have led to huge a huge surge, with PV module shipments in Q1 2010 increasing by over 60 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year," comments Sam Wilkinson, research analyst at IMS Research.

"PV module suppliers are undoubtedly enjoying this surge in demand and results have improved significantly," he continues. "We predict that average gross margins will reach over 30 percent this quarter."

First Solar, which currently enjoys some of the highest gross margins of PV module manufacturers, remained the largest supplier in Q1 2010. However, its share of module shipments decreased for the fifth consecutive quarter, and the gap between it and its crystalline competitors closed further, a trend that is likely to continue throughout this year, according to the report.

Although IMS Research predicts that total PV module shipments will grow by 60% in 2010, shipments of cadmium telluride (CdTe) modules (dominated by First Solar) are forecast to increase by just 20% due to limited capacity increases for the technology until 2011; these results will mean that CdTe’s share of shipments will decrease from nearly 11% in 2009 to just over 8% in 2010.

In contrast, the five largest Chinese module manufacturers (Suntech, Trina, Yingli, Canadian Solar and Solarfun), all suppliers of crystalline technology, continued to increase their command of the market and their combined share of global shipments reached 28% in the first quarter.

Intersolar 2010 Sets New Records (again)

The world's largest exhibition for the solar industry, Intersolar Europe, exceeded the expectations of the organizers last week in Munich, Germany. Close to 72,000 visitors from around 150 nations visited Intersolar Europe at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. 1,880 exhibitors, 33% more than in 2009 presented their products and services on 134,000 m² of exhibition area covering twelve halls and the connected outdoor area.

The organizers of Intersolar Europe, in cooperation with the German Solar Industry Association (BSW-Solar) from Berlin jointly presented the Intersolar Award.

The overwhelming success of Intersolar Europe 2010 can be summed up with the phrase: 'a world champion!', believes  Markus Elsasser, managing director of Solar Promotion GmbH, Pforzheim, one of the two organizers of Intersolar Europe. "The number of visitors exceeded our wildest expectations. According to the preliminary results we were able to welcome around 72,000 visitors – an increase of around 23% of the previous year. Intersolar Europe thus sends a strong signal from Munich to the solar industry around the world", he said.

For the third time running, the Intersolar Award rewarded innovative, groundbreaking products and services at Intersolar Europe. The organizers of Intersolar Europe, in cooperation with the German Solar Industry Association (BSW-Solar) from Berlin jointly presented the Intersolar Award.

This year, prizes were awarded in the fields of “Photovoltaics” and “Solar Thermal Technology” and for the first time in the category “PV Production Technology”.

The Intersolar Award for “Photovoltaics” went to ABB Schweiz AG, Gehrlicher Solar AG and SMA Solar Technology AG this year. The following companies received the Intersolar Award in the new category “PV Production Technology”: Festo AG & Co. KG, GEMO-TEC Ltd. and Gebr. Schmid GmbH + Co.

The winners in the "Solar thermal" category were FSAVE Solartechnik GmbH, InvenSor Gmbh as well as the joint submission from the Institute for Building Construction and Design at Stuttgart University, Ritter Energie- und Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co. KG, Hydro Building Systems GmbH and Frener & Reifer Metallbau GmbH.
